Is the Gemini API free?

← Hot Take
By Underrated SoftwareUpdated

The Gemini API has a Free Tier for developers and small projects. Eligible models have free input and output tokens within project rate limits, and new accounts begin on that tier. You can create an API key and use Hot Take without adding paid billing if the free allowance is available for your account, region, and model.

Free tier means a quota, not a cash credit

A free-tier project is governed by request and token limits. Some limits apply per minute and others per day. When you reach one, Gemini returns a rate-limit error and you wait for the relevant window to reset. The excess request is not automatically charged merely because the free quota is exhausted. Google says actual limits can vary and shows the active values for your project in Google AI Studio.

Are the first prompts every day always free?

They are free when all three conditions hold: the API key belongs to a Free Tier project, the chosen model is eligible for free use, and the project is still inside its current limits. It is safer to say that than to promise a fixed number of “free prompts,” because one prompt can contain far more text or image data than another and Google can change model quotas.

If you upgrade the project and use a paid key, Google says usage for that key is billed under its paid pricing. Paid tier is not simply “the same daily free prompts, then paid”; it is a separate billing tier. The live Gemini pricing table (opens in a new tab) identifies which models have a free tier and how paid input and output are priced.

How Hot Take uses the allowance

The first time you caption a photo, Hot Take usually asks Gemini twice: first to analyze the image, then to write five captions. A remix needs only the caption request because it reuses the analysis. The analysis is cached locally for three days, which can reduce repeated image requests, but every new set of captions is generated live.

How to avoid surprise charges

For the simplest no-charge setup, leave the Gemini project on its Free Tier and check Dashboard → Usage and Rate limits in AI Studio. Do not select Set up billing unless you actually need paid capacity. If you do upgrade, review whether your account uses prepay or postpay, monitor spend, and use the billing controls available for your account. Google’s billing guide (opens in a new tab) explains the current plans and dashboards.

If you want a small dollar limit attached to Hot Take’s key itself, OpenRouter is the clearer option: its API keys support a spending cap with an optional daily, weekly, or monthly reset. Read the OpenRouter key guide for that setup.

The privacy difference between free and paid Gemini

Google’s pricing page currently distinguishes the tiers in another important way: content submitted under the Free Tier may be used to improve Google’s products, while the paid tier says content is not used for that purpose. Provider terms can change, so review the current table before captioning a sensitive photo. Hot Take sends the photo directly to Gemini and cannot override Google’s account-level terms.

Hot Take itself is free and does not sell AI credits. Your Gemini project determines whether the model requests are free, rate-limited, or billed.

FAQ

Does the Gemini API free tier reset every day?

Daily request quotas reset on the provider’s schedule, while per-minute limits recover sooner. Some quotas are token-based. Check the active Rate limits page in AI Studio because there is no single number that applies to every model and account.

Will Gemini charge me after the free daily limit?

A project that remains on the Free Tier is rate-limited when it exceeds the applicable quota; it is not silently upgraded. A project you have explicitly upgraded to paid billing follows the paid pricing for its key.

Can I use Hot Take after reaching the Gemini limit?

Wait for the quota to reset, or connect an OpenRouter key with sufficient balance. You can switch providers from Hot Take’s AI Connection screen.
