Hot Take sends photos you caption to an AI provider. This page explains exactly what leaves your device, what we keep, and why.
What we send#
When you ask for captions, the selected photo is sent to our AI provider to be analyzed and captioned. Photos you don’t caption never leave your device.
We send the image and the settings you chose - the mode, the audience, and the heat level. We do not send your name, your email, or your photo library.
Why it leaves#
Writing a caption about a photo requires a model that can see the photo. That model does not run on your device, so the image is sent to our provider, analyzed, and the takes are returned to you.
This is the one place Hot Take differs from our other apps, and we would rather say so plainly than bury it.
Account & credit ledger#
We use Sign in with Apple and an installation ID to keep a server-side count of your credits. We never ask for your name or email - signing in shares only an anonymous Apple identifier.
The ledger records how many credits an operation cost and when, so that your balance is correct across your devices. It does not record the contents of your captions.
Purchases & refunds#
Purchases are processed by Apple. We never see your card details. To help resolve refund requests, you consent to Apple sharing your consumption data with us. This is required for our anti-abuse handling.
Retention#
Photos are held only as long as the request and its cache entry need them, and are not used to train models or sold to anyone.
Your credit ledger persists for as long as your account exists, because it is what your balance is made of. You can delete your account from inside the app: tap your credit counter at the top of the screen, then Delete Account at the bottom of the sheet that opens. That removes your account, any credits left on it and your purchase history, and it cannot be undone.
One thing deliberately outlives it. We keep a one-way hash of your Apple identifier, and the date, so that a deleted account cannot simply be recreated to claim another set of free credits. It cannot be reversed into your Apple ID, it is not linked to the account you deleted, and it records nothing beyond the fact that this identifier has already been given free credits once.
